AMERICA VOTED FOR STUART
Drive across the Roosevelt Bridge into Stuart and the town appears below in a sweep of blue water, sailboat masts, tiled roofs and palms gathered along the St. Lucie River. Historic Downtown sits at the water’s edge, where Flagler Avenue and Osceola Street lead toward shaded sidewalks, old storefronts and a boardwalk that slips behind restaurants and parks. In April 2024, USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards named Stuart the No. 2 Best Coastal Small Town in America. Stuart had finished second the previous year, then rose to first after four weeks of public voting, beating places such as Key West, Newport, Gulf Shores and Pismo Beach. Those of us who live here welcomed the distinction with considerable pride and a small amount of concern about future parking.
THE MUSIC CITIES RIVER
For years, I tried to persuade my mother to take a cruise with me. Every invitation was met with the same list of objections: the ships were too large, the walking excessive, the crowds exhausting and the atmosphere far too similar to a giant floating mall with several food courts attached. At 86, my mother is a spunky, active Midwesterner who is perfectly capable of traveling. She simply has no desire to spend a vacation studying deck plans, waiting for elevators or hiking half a mile because someone seated us in the wrong dining room.
I occasionally attempted to defend ocean cruising by explaining the restaurants, entertainment and clever ship design. My arguments were received with the polite detachment usually reserved for telemarketers.
SELFLESS LOVE FOUNDATION
Palm Beach, Fla. (April 16, 2026) – Selfless Love Foundation (SLF) hosted an inspiring evening to support Children and youth impacted by foster care. The non-profit welcomed 350 guests to its Gala at the Mar-a-Lago Club on Saturday, April 11. The evening began with a lively poolside cocktail reception set among lush pink florals. Guests sipped signature cocktails and bid on one-of-a-kind auction items. Actor Tony Danza hosted the event and delighted guests with a song-and-dance performance. The entire event centered on the moving stories of children and youth who have found forever families, support, and connection through Selfless Love Foundation. “Nearly 900 children enter foster care every day. Every child who gets adopted and every youth aging out of care who feels supported and prepared for adulthood is proof that Selfless Love Foundation is changing lives.
