REINVENTING FALL: The Shades we can't stop wearing

Cooler mornings and lower humidity signal fall in South Florida, along with the welcome return of boots. Frye’s classic leather styles are leading the season: tall riding boots in deep brown, suede ankle boots, and broken-in finishes that work easily with denim, dresses, and tailored separates.

NEW ORLEANS BY THE FORKFUL

I  orchestrated our trip down to the cocktail. Our reservations were confirmed, dinner clothes were pressed and I had packed a travel steamer, Manolo Blahnik slingbacks, a pair of Louboutins and earrings for every possible level of formality. My companion arrived with a beautifully cut sport coat, two pairs of sunglasses and an enviable ability to trust that the day would sort itself out. He glanced at the printed itinerary and asked where we were having the first drink. Between us, I thought, we had New Orleans covered.

At 100, “Zippo” Rhodes Still Has a Story to Tell

Sam Rhodes has just turned 100. Most mornings, you can find him volunteering at the library before he heads to the American Legion Post 126 in Jensen Beach. There, his old Zippo lighter is on display. Visitors may need someone to explain why a pocket lighter belongs among the post’s wartime keepsakes. Sam is the right man for the job.

He was 18 and asleep in his bunk aboard the USS Franklin on March 19, 1945, when Japanese bombs struck the aircraft carrier off the coast of Japan. The blast threw him against the overhead. Fires swept through the ship, ammunition exploded, and the Franklin began to list. More than 800 men died in the attack. Rhodes, a water tender third class, spent the next 24 hours working alongside other crew members to fight fires, dispose of dangerous ammunition and save the carrier they called “Big Ben.”
